We don’t know much yet about the Seydler family, or the origins of the surname. It’s likely that the name was originally spelled Seidler, which would trace the family’s origins to Switzerland, from which they emigrated around the year 1315, settling primarily on estates in the Brandenburg and Silesia regions of Germany.
We can trace our lineage to Ernst Seydler, who was born around 1780 and was a landowner in East Prussia. His son Heinrich, and his grandson Bernhard would also grow up to become manor owners in the same part of the country.
Bernhard’s daughter Margarete inherited a farm after her first husband was mortally wounded during WWI, and tended it with her second husband and their children. The family struggled to keep hold of their land when the Nazi government took control, and would eventually lose everything after the war when the female family members were taken prisoner by the Russians. Though Margarete died after her imprisonment, her daughter Inge managed to escape and traveled to Western Canada to start a new life.
