There isn’t much information about the Pytlik surname. We know it has Polish origins and according to the Dictionary of American Family Names, it is derived from the Polish name Pytel, which means ‘flour bolter’.
We can trace our branch of the Pytlik family to Krzyschkowitz, Poland, where August Pyttlik was born around 1875. He moved to the German town of Herten as a coal miner and then to the nearby town of Gladbeck, where his son August Jr was born. August Jr moved to Edemissen, Germany at some point before 1929; around this time he changed the spelling of the family name from Pyttlik to Pytlik.
In 1951, after completing his Cabinet Maker apprenticeship, August Jr’s adopted son Adolf set sail to Canada in search of a fresh start. While traveling across the country, he met Inge Kleinen and they settled together in Western Canada, where they raised three children.
