Joseph Harper Harrison was born in Chadderton, a town on the outskirts of Manchester in England, on 13 February 1849. His parents were Joshua Harrison, a shoemaker, and Jane O’Neal Harrison.
On 1 June, 1871, when he was 22 years old, Joseph married Agnes Elliotson in the city of Manchester. At the time of the marriage he was working as a shoemaker, possibly in his father’s shop. Later that year, the couple immigrated to Canada (passenger records on the Parisian ship from Liverpool list a Joseph Harrison who worked as a paper box maker, and it’s very likely this was him, though the transcribed year of immigration and age are incorrect and a record for Agnes cannot be found so it’s hard to confirm). The couple settled in Toronto, Ontario.
Agnes contracted tuberculosis and died on 20 October 1874, at the age of 23. The couple had one child, a son named William Harper.
Joseph eventually met Alma Charlotte Maria Hick, who he married on 13 October 1875 in Toronto. They had seven children – their first child Dorothy Jane was born around 1879 in England, and the rest were born in Canada: Hugh Harper (born 1880), Agnes Maud (born 1884), Benjamin “Joshua” (born 1886), Joseph Jr (born 1889), Alma (born 1893) and William Edwin (born 1895). Joseph worked as a paper box maker, eventually passing the job to his son Hugh, who would continue the career until his retirement.
Joseph died from carcinoma on 27 November 1915, after being ill for one month. He was buried in Necropolis Cemetery in Toronto, at Vault NG 122, near his first wife Agnes. Alma was buried with him after her death in 1929.
