Biography

Hugh Harper Harrison was born on 18 August 1880 in Toronto, Canada, the second child of Joseph Harper Harrison and Alma Charlotte Maria Harrison.

On 17 June 1903, when Hugh was 21, he married 25-year old Jennie Maud Gibson. The couple both worked as paper box makers for Robertson Brothers, which was a large candy manufacturing company in Toronto. Hugh would eventually work his way up to be manager of the box department at the factory (the building still stands at 107 Queen Street East, though the factory has long been closed).

The Harrisons raised five children: Alma Louisa (born 1904), Dorothy Pearl (born 1907), Edna May (born 1909), Harper Hugh (born 1910) and Douglas (born about 1915). They family regularly attended St James Cathedral and at the time of the 1921 census, they were living at 54 Metcalfe Street, in an area that is now known as the Cabbagetown Heritage District.

After retiring, Hugh managed the United Cigar Store. He died on 2 June 1947 of a brain hemorrhage and is buried in St James Cemetery in Toronto, Canada, alongside his wife Jennie (the birth date and name of his father were incorrect on his death record, which resulted in the wrong birth date being put on his tombstone).
