Max Karl Gustav Klein was born on 7 February 1866 to Hermann “Leo” and Mathilde Klein. At that time, the couple already had two sons, Eugen Rudolph Richard Klein and August Leo Richard Klein; it is unknown whether the family had any other children.
On 31 December 1884, 18-year-old Max married 22-year-old Clara Friederike Juliane Tzschabran in a village called Popiollen in East Prussia (now Popioły, Poland). The following October, their son Max Karl Leo was born – his birth certificate states that Max Sr. was a landowner at that time.
