Biography
Margaret Ann Scriven Price, known to friends and family as “Madge”, was born on 14 April 1880 to Joseph Scrivens and Mary Amelia McCarriston. Madge was the youngest of three children – her older sister Effie was born on 27 November 1876 and her brother Frederick John was born on 11 March 1879. Mary Amelia raised the children while Joseph Scrivens managed the family farm.
During her adult life, Madge worked as an office clerk in Toronto. On 20 June, 1906, she married James “Stewart” Price and the couple soon settled down in the Parkdale area. Their first child, James Arnold, or “Arn,” was born on July 13, 1907. Their second child Velma was born on March 5th 1909 but sadly died 6 days later. The couple had one more daughter, Margaret Ann, who was born August 18th 1910. At some point between 1911 and 1921, the family moved in with Madge’s parents on West Marion Street in the Parkdale area of the city.
Arnold married Dorothy Harrison in 1929 and moved to Calgary, while Margaret stayed in the family home and worked as a kindergarten teacher at John Wanless School.
After Stewart’s death in 1952, Madge continued to live with her daughter Margaret. She passed away on 27 November 1964; her name is mentioned on James Stewart’s headstone, however it’s not known for certain if she was buried in Prospect Cemetery alongside him.
