Biography
James Waterford Stewart Price was born in Woodhouse, Ontario, Canada on 13 April 1877 to Edward Durham Price and Diantha Gould Price. He was the youngest of the couple’s ten children, and was very likely named after James Waterford Stewart, M.D., the Port Dover doctor who delivered him and his siblings.
After his father’s death in 1880, James helped his mother take care of the family farm, until his brother Albert Ernest took it over with his wife around 1890. He continued living with his mother and her domestic helper Beatrice Abbott until her death in 1901. When she passed away, Diantha left the family estate to be divided between James and his seven surviving brothers and sisters.
After burying his mother in Port Dover, James moved to Toronto and started to be known by the name Stewart. He became a traveling salesman and eventually met Margaret (Madge) Scrivens. The couple married on 20 June 1906 in Toronto, Ontario and soon settled down in the Parkdale area. Their first child, James Arnold, or “Arn,” was born on July 13, 1907. Their second child Velma was born on March 5th 1909 but sadly died 6 days later. The couple had one more daughter, Margaret Ann, who was born August 18th 1910. Madge’s parents moved in with the family, and the family moved further down West Marion Street around 1930 due to the building of a new hospital.
After their son James Arnold married and moved to Calgary with his wife, Stewart and Madge continued living with their daughter Margaret, who remained single and worked as a kindergarten teacher at John Wanless School in North Toronto.
Stewart died on 18 July 1952 in Toronto, Ontario, and was buried in Prospect Cemetery, where his sister Velma was buried in 1944. His wife and daughter continued residing together, until Madge’s death in 1964. She was buried with Stewart in Prospect Cemetery. When their daughter Margaret died in 1999, she was buried alongside her parents.
