13 July 1907 — 14 January 1971
Margaret Price
James Arnold Price Jr
His sister, Margaret, was born in August of 1910 and they spent much of their childhood living on Marion Street in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto with their parents and their mother’s parents.
On 13 July 1929, Arnold married Dorothy Pearl Harrison at St James Anglican Cathedral in Toronto, a church he remained a member of until his death. At the time of his marriage, Arnold was 22 years old and worked as a radio engineer; Dorothy was also 22 and employed by the Bell Telephone company. After they were married, they moved to Calgary, Alberta for several years. Upon returning to Ontario, the couple had a son and a daughter and settled in Toronto. Arnold took a job as a salesman at Philco Corp., following in the footsteps of his salesman father.
Arnold and Dorothy moved to Richmond Hill around 1956, becoming one of the first families to settle in the eastern part of the city. Dorothy’s mother, Jennie, lived with them until her death in 1962. The couple threw themselves into community work, helping form the Anglican Church of St Gabriel, the Home & School Association at Walter Scott Public School and joining several other organizations that would over the years help the community flourish.
The Price’s bought a cabin at Bernard Lake, where they vacationed over several summers. During their time in Richmond Hill, their two children grew up; their son James married and moved to Vancouver, BC with his young family and their daughter married a military pilot and moved abroad.
Dorothy and Arnold regularly hosted events at their home on Fernleigh Circle, and became supporters of the Progressive Conservative Association, with Dorothy even being presented with an engraved silver tray by Ontario Premier John Robarts in 1965 for her work as secretary at the Richmond Hill branch.
Arnold Price died on 14 January 1971 at Toronto’s St Michael’s Hospital, after 5 days of illness, leaving behind his wife and two children. He was cremated at Marshall Funeral Home, and his ashes were transported to Elgin Mills Cemetery, to be buried in a common ground grave. A mention of his funeral in the Richmond Hill Liberal gave a glimpse of the impact that Arnold had on his community, stating that “the many floral tributes and attendance at the service attested to the high esteem in which Mr. Price was held by all who knew him.”
Arnold’s widow, Dorothy, continued to do charity work for the Richmond Hill community until her death in 1982, after which the Dorothy Price Park was named in her honour.
