Isabella Brown McLachlan was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 4 March 1873 to John McLachlan, a shirt salesman, and his wife Frances Marshall. She was the youngest of five children, with three older sisters and one brother.

Isabella married Thomas Lorimer in Glasgow on March 23, 1894 at a building on St Vincent’s Crescent that was built in the mid-1850s by architect Alexander Kirkland. The couple’s first child, Frances, was born a year later in 1895 and named after Isabella’s mother. Five more children followed: Thomas Jr was born in 1897, Isabella Jr in 1889, Dugald in 1900, John in 1908 and Mabel in 1909.

At the time of the 1901 census, the family was living at 45 Centre Street in Glasgow. Census records from 1911 are not publically available, but can be viewed for a fee on the ScotlandsPeople website.

In 1916, Isabella’s oldest son Thomas Jr was stationed in France as part of the 1st Battalion of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was killed on 15 August at the age of 20 during the Battle of the Somme. The family was living at 21 Dale Street, Glasgow at the time of the tragedy.

In 1926, Isabella boarded the SS Letitia with her husband and their children Mabel and John to start a new life in Canada. They arrived in Quebec on 20 June 1926 after a 9-day journey across the Atlantic, and settled in Ontario, Canada.

Isabella Lorimer passed away from heart disease on 15 February 1943 at 69 years of age. She is buried in White Brick Church Cemetery in Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada with her husband and their children Mabel and Isobel.
