Biography
Edward Durham Price was born around 1827 in rural Ontario. Nothing much is known yet about his early life; land deeds show that he bought property from William Price and William’s second wife Elizabeth Corman Price – it’s possible that William and his first wife were Edward’s parents, though no birth records or wills can yet be found to prove this.
On 11 April 1854, in the township of Cramahe, Edward married Diantha Gould, whose ancestors followed the United Empire Loyalists from the eastern United States to Canada. In 1858, Edward purchased the south part of lot #18 in Woodhouse Township, Ontario, and moved his wife and two children there from the town of Grantham to run a farm. The farm was located East of Port Dover and consisted of a half section which ran down to Lake Erie. Eight more children were born over the following 19 years.
Edward died of dropsy on 31 March 1880, after 2 years of illness, and was buried in Port Dover Cemetery on 4 April. After his death, his wife continued to keep the farm and followed the specific instructions he left on raising the children and managing their finances.
When Diantha died in 1901, she was buried with Edward and the family estate was divided between their surviving children.
