Biography

Thomas Lorimer was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 25 June 1871 to Thomas Lorimer and Ann McFall. As he grew older, Thomas worked as an engineer, iron turner and stonemason. He married Isabella Brown Mclachlan in Glasgow on March 23, 1894 in a building on St Vincent Crescent built in the mid-1800s by architect Alexander Kirkland.

At the time of the 1901 census, the couple and their children Francis, Thomas, Isabella and Dugald were living at 45 Centre Street in Glasgow. The youngest children John and Mabel were born several years later. Census records from 1911 are not publically available, but can be viewed for a fee here.

In 1916, Thomas and Isabella’s oldest son Thomas Jr was stationed in France as part of the 1st Battalion of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was killed on 15 August at the age of 20 during the Battle of the Somme. The family was living at 21 Dale Street, Glasgow at the time of the tragedy.

In 1926, Thomas boarded the SS Letitia with his wife and their children Mabel and John to start a new life in Canada as a farmer. He arrived in Quebec on 20 June 1926 after a 9-day journey across the Atlantic, and eventually settled in Ontario, Canada.

He died on 2 March 1943 at the age of 71 and is buried in White Brick Church Cemetery, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada with his wife and two of his children.
