Our side of the Price family lived in Ontario’s Woodhouse Township in the mid-1800’s and moved to British Columbia in the 1970’s. Earlier family history is hard to trace, though we know that the ancestors of Edward Durham Price joined the United Empire Loyalists on their migration to Canada following the American Revolution. The U.E. title stayed in the family until 1999; new Canadian laws prevented it from being passed on to further generations.
It’s possible that Edward Durham Price was a relative of Stephen Price who came up to Canada from New Jersey around the 1790’s and settled in Woodhouse, Ontario, although we don’t have any proof of this.
The Price surname is believed to be a patronymic Welsh surname meaning “son of Rhys.” Historically, the name Rhys was preceded by “ap”, which translated to “son of”.
Census records show that the family has German heritage; unfortunately we can’t yet pinpoint where exactly this branch emmigrated from.
The motto which sometimes accompanies the Price family crest is Vita brevis gloria aeterna, which translates to “life is short, glory eternal”.
